CLASS: Introduction to Digital Photography & Your Camera

This in-depth, all-day, hands-on course is an introduction to photography and the digital camera. If you are new to photography, just bought your first digital camera (point-n-shoot or DSLR), or simply need a review of the basics, this course is for you. Maybe you have decided to step-up from taking everyday snapshots and use your camera to capture artistic and inspiring photos. Or, perhaps you have a vacation planned and want to bring home photos that people actually want to see.

Why you should come: To become a truly accomplished photographer, you must learn the general principles of photography along with understanding how to control your camera. Only then can you take your photos to new levels.

Photography is both art and science, and with digital photography, the “science” has become more complicated. Yet, despite all the new technology, photography still about its basic principles: exposure, lighting, and composition. And all those principles are still controlled by one basic tool: the camera.

After taking this all-day, hands-on workshop, you will understand the basics of digital photography and most importantly, how to use those buttons, dials, displays, and menus on your digital camera Our hands-on exercises will help you retain what you learn. This workshop is a great lead-in to the rest of our “Elements of Photography” series of classes.

  • Getting to Know Your Camera
  • Escape (P)rogram mode and Think Like a Photographer
  • Gadget Talk – what you really need and what you may not

What to bring:

  • Digital Camera – Point-and-shoot or DSLR (recommended)
  • Owner’s manual (very important)
  • Empty memory card(s)
  • Fully charged batteries

INSTRUCTOR: The class will be led by Rick Hicaro, owner of Chicago Digital Arts & Photography studios in Chicago. Rick is a professional photographer and instructor with over 25 years experience. Besides photography, he is also proficient in digital workflow and graphic design, using programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Photomatix Pro, and many others.
